Designed by American architect Rick Jacobson and opened in 2009, the Moon Course is renowned for its integration with the Danxia landforms, a UNESCO World Heritage Site characterized by red sandstone cliffs and monoliths and characterized by steep cliffs, landforms that are unique to this part of China and are abundant at Lion Lake. Jacobson has cleverly incorporated many of the red cliffs into his golf course, with several holes playing through the structures and at least adjacent to the cliffs or surrounded by their red soil, creating a beautiful and strategically demanding layout. The course was recognized as a top 10 Chinese course in 2011 and recently Asia’s top 100 course in 2024 (#75).
In addition to these rocky outcrops, other notable features on display at the Moon Course are the jagged bunker edges and the consistent use of South African Lovegrass as a ground cover. These densely grazed tufts are even used on the bunker faces, creating a more rugged hazard and offering more challenge, making it one of the most difficult golf courses in China.
In addition to the golf course, Lion Lake Country Club offers comprehensive facilities, including a full-service clubhouse, a two-story driving range, and the Troon Golf Academy for those looking to improve their game. The club’s commitment to excellence has earned it recognition as one of the top quality golfing venues in China.
