Hoa Binh is not a destination most international golfers have on their radar, and that works in its favor. Located 40 to 60 kilometers southwest of Hanoi, this mountainous province has two golf facilities worth knowing: Phoenix Golf Resort and Hilltop Valley Golf Club. The course count is small, but the landscape is unlike anything near Vietnam’s capital. Limestone karst mountains rise alongside fairways, earning Phoenix the local nickname “Ha Long Bay on land.” The comparison is a touch generous, but the scenery is genuinely different from the parkland courses in Hanoi proper.
Hoa Binh is also the heartland of Vietnam’s Muong ethnic culture, with over 60% of the province’s population belonging to the Muong minority. Stilt house villages, ethnic markets, bamboo-tube rice, and gong performances are all part of the local experience. The Mai Chau valley, about two hours further west, is one of northern Vietnam’s best-known trekking and homestay destinations. For golfers who want a round of mountain golf combined with something culturally different from a city trip, Hoa Binh is a practical day trip from Hanoi or a stop on a broader northern Vietnam route. It suits golfers traveling with non-golfing partners, couples looking for a countryside escape, and groups on longer Hanoi-based packages who want variety beyond the usual resort courses.
Best Golf Courses in Hoa Binh
Hoa Binh has two golf facilities. The choice is straightforward, but the two courses are quite different from each other.
- Phoenix Golf Resort
Phoenix Golf Resort is the larger of the two and one of the biggest pure golf facilities in Vietnam. According to GolfLux, it is a 54-hole resort in Luong Son district, about 40 kilometers from Hanoi. GolfPass lists the three courses: Phoenix Course (Ronald Fream, par 72, 7,214 yards, opened 2007), Dragon Course (Kentaro Sato, par 72, 7,281 yards, opened 2005), and Champion Course (Song Ho Golf Design Group from Korea, links-style layout). The resort covers 316 hectares with a 144-room hotel, restaurants, and spa.
What makes Phoenix different from other Hanoi-area courses is the terrain. Limestone mountains frame many of the holes on the Phoenix and Dragon courses, creating a visual backdrop you simply do not get at flat parkland courses closer to the city. The Dragon Course front nine in particular is often described by golf travel sources as dramatic, with fairways threading between and around rock formations. The Champion Course is flatter and more open in a links style. One honest note: multiple golfer reviews mention that course maintenance and service quality at Phoenix can be inconsistent. The scenery is the main draw, and it delivers on that front.
Phoenix suits golfers who want to see something visually unusual and do not mind a course that feels rougher around the edges compared to more polished Hanoi resorts like BRG Kings Island or Sky Lake.
- Hilltop Valley Golf Club
Hilltop Valley is the newer Hoa Binh golf course, with the first 18 holes opening in late 2018. According to GolfLux and Golfasian, it is a 27-hole championship course designed by IMG Golf Course Design, located in Ky Son district about 60 kilometers west of Hanoi. GolfPass lists it as par 71, 6,908 yards. The course sits on hilly terrain with views of the Ba Vi mountain range and the Da River.
The front nine plays through a valley with a winding river that comes into play on several holes, generous fairways, and relatively gentle contours. The back nine is a different story. It climbs along mountain ridgelines with severe elevation changes, and the 12th hole sits at the highest point of the course with a wide view of Hoa Binh province. Golfasian notes that the tee shot on the 13th drops more than 45 meters to the green below. The Paspalum turf contrasts with white sand bunkers and red rock outcrops, which gives the course a distinct visual character. The modern clubhouse overlooks the 18th green and includes a restaurant and pro shop.
Hilltop Valley suits golfers who enjoy elevation, dramatic hole-by-hole variety, and a course that is still maturing. Save energy for the back nine. The climbs are real.
Which course is better?
If you want the most unusual scenery and the biggest operation (54 holes, on-site hotel), Phoenix Golf Resort is the obvious pick. If you want a newer course in better condition with serious elevation changes and mountain views, Hilltop Valley is the stronger choice for the actual golf. For a Hoa Binh golf trip, playing one round at each gives you the full picture. But most travelers will visit Hoa Binh as a day trip from Hanoi, in which case one course is the practical limit.
Best Time to Play Golf in Hoa Binh
Hoa Binh’s weather follows the same patterns as Hanoi and northern Vietnam. Vietnam’s official tourism website notes that the region has a wet season from May to September and a dry season from October to April.
March to May. Temperatures range from about 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. Rain is limited, and the mountain air is warm without being oppressive. This is a strong window for a Hoa Binh golf day trip, and it also lines up well with the best conditions for cycling or walking through Mai Chau valley.
June to August. Hot and wet. Mountain roads can be affected by rain, and afternoon downpours are common. If you play during this period, book a morning tee time and keep the schedule flexible. Course conditions at Phoenix in particular can be affected by heavy rain.
September to November. The best window overall. The harvest season turns Mai Chau’s rice fields golden in September and October, the air cools down, and the mountains are at their most photogenic. This is also the most comfortable period for golf.
December to February. Cool and sometimes misty. Temperatures in the mountains can feel noticeably colder than central Hanoi. Golf is fine on clear days, but visibility can be limited in foggy conditions. Bring a jacket.
Hoa Binh Golf Holidays and Package Tours
Hoa Binh works best as a one-day or two-day addition to a Hanoi golf holiday rather than a standalone destination. The most practical format is to include a Hoa Binh golf day within a longer Hanoi-based package. GolfLux’s multi-day Hanoi golf packages frequently include Phoenix Golf Resort as one of the rounds:
For couples and mixed groups, Hoa Binh is especially useful. One person golfs at Phoenix or Hilltop Valley while the other visits a Muong village, tries a homestay cooking experience, or explores the Mai Chau valley. The non-golf side of Hoa Binh is strong enough to fill a full day.
Golf with Mountain Culture in Hoa Binh
This is the combination that makes Hoa Binh worth the detour. Plenty of golf destinations offer mountain scenery, but few put you this close to living ethnic minority culture. Hoa Binh province has more than 50 ethnic tourism hamlets, according to Vietnam’s tourism authority. The Muong people, the province’s largest group, maintain stilt house architecture, weaving traditions, and seasonal gong festivals. Mai Chau valley offers homestays in Thai ethnic villages, cycling through rice paddies, and meals of bamboo-tube rice and grilled mountain chicken.
A good itinerary: drive from Hanoi to Hoa Binh in the morning, play a round at Phoenix or Hilltop Valley, then continue to a Muong village or Mai Chau for the afternoon and overnight. Alternatively, golf first and return to Hanoi the same day, saving the cultural portion for a separate day trip. Either way, the combination of limestone-mountain golf and ethnic highland culture is something you will not find at any other golf destination near Hanoi.
Book Tee Times in Hoa Binh
Tee time availability at both Phoenix and Hilltop Valley is generally easier to secure than at Hanoi’s busier courses. Phoenix has 54 holes, so capacity is rarely an issue. Still, booking through a tour operator is the practical approach for international visitors, because it bundles the tee time with the transfer from Hanoi (about one hour each way) and avoids any language or logistics friction on arrival.
When booking, confirm your preferred course, date, and tee time. Morning rounds are the safer choice from June through August. If you are combining golf with a Mai Chau visit, plan the route in advance, as Mai Chau adds roughly another hour of driving west from the golf courses.
