Phan Thiet and neighbouring Mui Ne have been beach holiday destinations for southern Vietnamese travelers for years, but the golf side of things has changed significantly since PGA NovaWorld opened its Greg Norman-designed 36-hole complex in 2021 and 2022. Combined with the long-established Sea Links Golf and Country Club, the area now has 54 holes of championship golf along a stretch of coast known for sand dunes, kite surfing, and some of the most consistent sunshine in Vietnam.
The destination sits in Binh Thuan Province, roughly 250 kilometres northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, which translates to about four to five hours by road. There is no commercial airport in Phan Thiet, so most travelers drive from Ho Chi Minh City or combine the trip with a southern Vietnam itinerary. That drive keeps the area slightly less international than Da Nang or Nha Trang, but it also means less crowding on the courses and at the resorts.
Phan Thiet suits golfers who want genuine links-style conditions in a warm, dry climate, weekend travelers from Ho Chi Minh City looking for a beach and golf escape, and couples or groups who want to pair golf with sand dune adventures, kite surfing, and seafood. The area is often described as having the best year-round golf weather in Vietnam, which makes it a practical choice in months when northern or central destinations are in their wet season.
Best golf courses in Phan Thiet
Two facilities offer a combined 54 holes of championship golf, with different styles and settings.
1. PGA NovaWorld Phan Thiet
According to GolfLux course information, PGA NovaWorld Phan Thiet is a 36-hole facility designed by Greg Norman. The Ocean Course (18 holes, par 72, 7,400 yards) opened in April 2021, and the Garden Course (18 holes, par 72, 7,200 yards) opened in January 2022. The complex also serves as the exclusive training centre for PGA students in Vietnam.
The Ocean Course mixes parkland and links-style terrain, with rugged bunkers lined with native grass and views across the East Sea from multiple holes. The Garden Course has a different personality, with a winding stream crossing several holes on the front nine and a gradual climb on the back nine that opens up panoramic views over Phan Thiet Bay before a waterfall provides a dramatic finish at the 18th green. Having two distinct 18-hole layouts from the same designer gives golfers a reason to stay for multiple days without repeating the same experience.
PGA NovaWorld suits golfers who want a modern, large-scale facility with the Greg Norman name, travelers who prefer a stay-and-play resort format, and anyone who wants to play two different championship courses within the same complex.
2. Sea Links Golf and Country Club
According to GolfLux course information, Sea Links Golf and Country Club is an 18-hole par 72 course measuring 7,671 yards, with a slope rating of 138.4. The course is built on 168 hectares at approximately 80 metres above sea level, overlooking the East Sea. It is located in the heart of the Phan Thiet and Mui Ne tourism area.
At 7,671 yards, Sea Links is the longest course in the Phan Thiet area and one of the longest in Vietnam. The elevated position means you are playing with the ocean below and wind above, which adds a genuine links dimension to the round. The undulating greens, elaborate bunkers, and numerous sand dunes create a challenging test that has earned the course a reputation as one of Asia’s most difficult links-style layouts. It has hosted multiple golf events and tournaments.
Sea Links suits experienced golfers who want a serious links challenge with maximum yardage, travelers staying in the Mui Ne resort strip who want a course within the tourism zone, and golfers who enjoy playing in windy, elevated coastal conditions.
Which course is better?
If you want a modern 36-hole complex with resort infrastructure and two distinct Greg Norman layouts, PGA NovaWorld is the more complete offering. If you want the longest, most challenging single course with an elevated ocean position and the feel of a traditional links, Sea Links is the harder test. For a multi-day Phan Thiet golf trip, playing all three available 18-hole loops gives you genuine variety: Ocean Course links, Garden Course parkland, and Sea Links elevated coastal, each with a different character.
Best time to play golf in Phan Thiet
Phan Thiet enjoys one of the driest and sunniest climates in Vietnam, making it playable year-round.
November to April. The peak season. Dry, sunny, and warm with comfortable temperatures and light breezes. This is also the best period for kite surfing at Mui Ne and the most popular window for domestic and international beach tourism. Courses are in top condition.
May to October. Slightly more humid, with occasional afternoon showers from June to September. Temperatures are higher but still comfortable for golf, especially with morning tee times. The courses are quieter, green fees may be lower, and the landscape stays green. Rain tends to be short and sharp rather than prolonged.
Year-round note. Phan Thiet is drier than Nha Trang, Da Nang, or Ho Chi Minh City for most of the year. The area sits in a rain shadow that reduces monsoon impact. This is one of the main reasons golf works here in months when other Vietnam destinations are less reliable.
Phan Thiet golf holidays and package tours
Phan Thiet works well as a three to seven day programme, typically accessed by road from Ho Chi Minh City. The drive is about four to five hours, which makes weekend trips comfortable and longer stays practical.
A typical Phan Thiet golf package includes resort accommodation at Radisson Phan Thiet, NovaWorld, or one of the Mui Ne beach resorts, transfers from Ho Chi Minh City, tee times at PGA NovaWorld and Sea Links, caddie and cart, and usually one non-golf excursion such as the sand dunes or a fishing village visit.
Some available packages on GolfLux:
For all options, the Phan Thiet Golf Packages page lists available programmes. For a custom itinerary, use the trip planner.
Phan Thiet is a natural choice for couples and mixed-interest groups. The Mui Ne beach strip has a well-developed resort scene with spas, water sports, and dining. Non-golfers can fill their days with kite surfing lessons, sand dune tours, fishing village visits, or simply lying on the beach while the golfer tackles 18 holes down the road.
Golf with sand dunes and coastal travel in Phan Thiet
This is what gives Phan Thiet a character that no other Vietnam golf destination can match. The sand dunes near Mui Ne, both the white dunes (Bau Trang) and the red dunes closer to town, have been compared to a miniature Sahara. You can sandboard, ride ATVs, or simply walk through the dunes at sunrise, which is when the light and shadows are at their best.
Mui Ne’s fishing village is one of the more photogenic coastal scenes in southern Vietnam, with hundreds of colourful round basket boats bobbing in the harbour. The area is also one of Vietnam’s top kite surfing destinations, with consistent wind conditions that draw riders from around the world, particularly from November to March.
Poshanu Cham Tower, a small but well-preserved Hindu temple complex on a hilltop near Phan Thiet, offers a quick cultural side trip. And the seafood in this area is the real thing: grilled squid, lobster, and local specialties like lau tha (a Phan Thiet-style hotpot) are available at beachfront restaurants and market stalls at reasonable prices.
Book tee times in Phan Thiet
Booking tee times in Phan Thiet is straightforward but best handled alongside accommodation and Ho Chi Minh City transfers, especially for international travelers. The two facilities are in different parts of the Phan Thiet area, so transfer logistics between courses and your hotel should be coordinated in advance.
When booking, confirm:
- Which courses you want to play and which 18-hole loop at PGA NovaWorld (Ocean or Garden)
- Your ideal dates and tee times
- Morning versus afternoon preference
- Whether you need club rental
- Cart and caddie arrangements
- Whether you are staying at NovaWorld/Radisson, in the Mui Ne strip, or in Phan Thiet city
- Transfer from Ho Chi Minh City (private car is the standard option)
- Sand dune tour scheduling, ideally at sunrise before your tee time or on a non-golf day
One practical note: if you are driving from Ho Chi Minh City on the same day as your first round, plan for an afternoon tee time. The four to five hour drive is too long to combine with a morning start. Many golfers prefer to arrive the evening before and play fresh the next morning. Wind tends to pick up in the afternoon at Sea Links due to its elevated position, so experienced links golfers may want to book that course for later in the day when conditions are more challenging and the light across the ocean is at its best.
