Mandalay Golf Courses: Book Tee Times & Explore Myanmar's Royal Capital Golf in 2026/2027

Golf Course Map

Mandalay is Myanmar’s second-largest city and its last royal capital before British annexation in 1885, positioned at a dramatic bend in the Irrawaddy River with the Shan hills rising to the east. The golf here sits within a city that has more concentrated historical and cultural depth than anywhere else in the country outside Bagan.

The city has 6 courses, with Shwe Man Tuang Golf Resort and Myotha National Golf Club the two names most visiting golfers target. Shwe Man Tuang Golf Resort is the more prominent resort option, with facilities that make it the practical choice for visitors who want accommodation and golf on the same property. Myotha National Golf Club is part of the Myotha Industrial Park development and offers a different scale and environment, with a well-maintained layout that serves both the business community and visiting players.

Green fees in Mandalay are affordable in line with Myanmar’s domestic pricing, and the quality of the main courses holds up reasonably well against what you’d find in comparable second-tier cities across Southeast Asia.

The cultural programme in Mandalay and its surrounding area is what elevates a golf trip here beyond the courses. The Mahamuni Pagoda, with its famous Buddha image that devotees have covered in so many gold leaf offerings that the figure’s features have blurred over centuries, is one of the most active pilgrimage sites in Myanmar. Kuthodaw Pagoda’s 729 marble tablets inscribed with the entire Tipitaka Buddhist canon hold the title of the world’s largest book. The ancient cities of Inwa, Sagaing, and Amarapura, each a former capital in its own right, are all within an hour’s drive.

Mandalay Golf Guide: Where to Play, When to Go, and How to Combine Golf with Myanmar's Cultural Capital

Important note on travel: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup. Check current travel advisories from your home government before booking.

Mandalay is Myanmar’s second largest city and its cultural capital, sitting on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River in the dry zone of central Myanmar. It was the last royal capital before British annexation in 1885, and the Buddhist monastery culture, royal palace ruins, craftsman quarters, and the Mandalay Hill viewpoint give the city more heritage density than any other Myanmar destination outside of Bagan. For golfers, Mandalay is the strongest Myanmar city outside of Yangon, with five courses listed in the GolfLux database. The standout is Myotha National Golf Club in the Myotha Industrial Park 50 kilometers south of the city, described by the club as the best golf course in Myanmar at 7,803 yards. Ye Dagon Taung Golf Club, the waterfall course 30 minutes west of downtown at the base of Yay Dagon Taung Mountain, measures 7,127 yards. Shwe Mann Taung Golf Resort, 15 minutes from the city center with views of the Golden Palace grounds, measures 6,564 yards.

The non-golf case for Mandalay is well established among Myanmar travelers. The U Bein Bridge over Taungthaman Lake, the world’s longest teak footbridge at over 1.2 kilometers according to Myanmar’s Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, is one of the country’s most photographed sunset locations. Mandalay Hill’s covered walkway leads to the summit pagoda with views across the city and the Irrawaddy plain. The Mahamuni Pagoda houses a revered Buddha image whose face is literally covered in layers of gold leaf applied by male devotees over centuries. And Bagan, with over 3,000 ancient temples and pagodas on the Irrawaddy plain, is about three hours south by road.

Mandalay suits golfers building a Myanmar circuit that combines city golf with the Bagan temple plain, visitors using the city as a base for the northern Myanmar cultural program, and anyone building the comprehensive Myanmar program that connects Yangon, Bagan, and Mandalay in a single trip.

Best golf courses in Mandalay

Five courses serve the city and surrounding area. Three form the core visiting program.

1. Myotha National Golf Club

Myotha National Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 7,803 yards, located in Myotha Industry Park, 50 kilometers south of Mandalay according to the club, described as widely considered the best golf course in Myanmar. At 7,803 yards it is the longest course in the entire Myanmar GolfLux database and the strongest specification of any listed Myanmar course. The Myotha Industrial Park setting gives it a different character from the city courses, and the 50-kilometer transfer south on the Mandalay to Nay Pyi Taw highway takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

It suits experienced low-handicap golfers who want the longest and most challenging single round available in Myanmar, and any visiting golfer for whom playing the best-rated course in the country is a specific objective.

2. Ye Dagon Taung Golf Club

Ye Dagon Taung Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 7,127 yards, located 30 minutes west of downtown Mandalay at the base of Yay Dagon Taung Mountain according to the club. The mountain backdrop and the waterfall course character give it the most distinctive natural setting of the Mandalay city-area courses. At 7,127 yards it is a proper championship-length test, and the forested mountain base setting differentiates it clearly from the flat city courses.

3. Shwe Mann Taung Golf Resort

Shwe Mann Taung Golf Resort is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,564 yards, located 15 minutes from Mandalay city center with views of the Golden Palace grounds according to the club. The proximity to the city center and the royal palace views give it the most historically contextual setting of the Mandalay courses. At 6,564 yards it is accessible across a wider handicap range than Myotha or Ye Dagon Taung.

4. Shwe Sar Yan Golf Resort and Country Club

Shwe Sar Yan Golf Resort and Country Club is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,057 meters on the Mandalay to Pyinoolwin Road in Patheingyi Township according to the club. The flat terrain and shorter yardage make it the most accessible Mandalay option for mid-to-high handicap golfers or as a lighter second-day round.

Which course is better?

Myotha National Golf Club is the first choice for course quality and the longest test in the country, despite the 50-kilometer drive. Ye Dagon Taung is the natural setting first choice for golfers who want a mountain backdrop within city range. Shwe Mann Taung suits golfers who want a city-adjacent round with historical context. Most three to four day Mandalay programs pair Myotha and Ye Dagon Taung as the two primary rounds.

Best time to play golf in Mandalay

Mandalay sits in Myanmar’s central dry zone, which means it is hotter and drier than Yangon year-round and receives considerably less monsoon rain. November through February is the most comfortable window with temperatures around 20 to 30 degrees Celsius and clear mornings. March through May is increasingly hot, with April the most extreme month across central Myanmar. Early morning tee times before 7am are essential from March through May. June through October brings some monsoon rain even to the dry zone, though significantly less than coastal Myanmar.

Mandalay golf holidays and package tours

Mandalay suits three to five day programs, either as a standalone city golf destination or as the northern half of a Yangon and Mandalay combined circuit. Mandalay International Airport has direct connections from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Singapore, and several Chinese cities alongside domestic connections from Yangon. The domestic flight from Yangon takes about one hour.

The Yangon and Mandalay combined circuit is the most established Myanmar golf itinerary structure, covering the Yangon course cluster for the first two to three days and the Mandalay courses for the final two to three days with a domestic flight connection. The Bagan extension from Mandalay, by a one-hour domestic flight or a three to four hour road transfer south, adds the most recognized non-golf draw in Myanmar to any Mandalay program.

Practical package formats:

5 days Yangon and Mandalay golf package with two Yangon rounds and two Mandalay rounds, from USD 670 per person

5 days golf in Mandalay with four Mandalay rounds including Myotha and Ye Dagon Taung

6 days Mandalay golf package covering the full Mandalay course circuit across five nights, from USD 730 per person

7 days Yangon and Mandalay golf package combining both city programs across six nights, from USD 970 per person

The U Bein Bridge sunset visit at Taungthaman Lake in Amarapura, about 10 kilometers south of Mandalay, is the most practically accessible and visually distinctive non-golf activity in the area. The Mandalay Hill sunset view and the Mahamuni Pagoda morning visit, where the gold leaf application ceremony happens at dawn, both work naturally around an early morning golf round. Browse Mandalay golf packages or create a custom Myanmar golf itinerary that combines Mandalay with Yangon and the Bagan temple circuit.

Golf with Mandalay’s royal heritage and the Bagan temple plain

Mandalay’s heritage sites are concentrated enough to cover in two afternoons without rushing. The Mandalay Palace, the last royal palace of the Konbaung Dynasty constructed in 1857 and mostly destroyed by Allied bombing in 1945, was reconstructed after independence within the original moated square. The reconstruction is controversial among historians given its concrete construction, but the Mandalay Palace Museum within the grounds and the watchtower views over the moat give the site genuine heritage value. The Kuthodaw Pagoda adjacent to Mandalay Hill houses 729 marble tablets on which the complete Tipitaka Buddhist scripture is inscribed, a project of King Mindon completed in 1868, which Myanmar’s Department of Archaeology notes as the world’s largest book.

Bagan’s temple plain, accessible from Mandalay by a one-hour domestic flight or three to four hours by road, is the non-golf experience that most Myanmar travelers specifically make the trip for. The Bagan Archaeological Zone covers over 3,000 Buddhist monuments from the 9th to 13th centuries, ranging from small crumbling pagodas to the massive Dhammayangyi temple. Myanmar’s Department of Archaeology manages the zone, and sunrise balloon flights above the temple plain are consistently cited as one of Southeast Asia’s most memorable visual experiences. A Mandalay golf program that includes a two-night Bagan extension gives the overall trip the breadth that distinguishes it from a pure city golf visit.

Book tee times in Mandalay

Myotha National Golf Club requires advance booking given the 50-kilometer transfer, and weekend slots should be confirmed a week ahead. Ye Dagon Taung and Shwe Mann Taung are accessible with a few days’ notice. All Mandalay bookings are most reliable when arranged through GolfLux or a Myanmar specialist operator who has current on-the-ground access confirmation given the political situation. Start planning here or view Mandalay golf packages to find a program that covers the Mandalay courses alongside the Bagan extension.

The ancient city circuit around Mandalay is the most rewarding cultural programme in Myanmar outside Bagan. U Bein Bridge in Amarapura, a 1.2-kilometre teak bridge across Taungthaman Lake, is most atmospheric at sunrise and sunset when monks and locals cross in silhouette against the water. Inwa, the former capital across the Irrawaddy, is best explored by horse cart through the village and temple ruins. Sagaing Hill across the river from Mandalay has over 500 Buddhist monasteries and pagodas across a hillside visible from the bridge below. In the city itself, Mandalay Palace’s teak reconstruction and the jade workshop district in the gem quarter give further depth to the visit.
