Hainan Golf Courses: Book Tee Times & Play China's Tropical Golf Island in 2026/2027

Golf Course Map

Hainan is China’s only tropical island province, and it has more high-quality golf courses per square kilometre than anywhere else in the country. The combination of warm weather year-round, resort-standard facilities, and courses designed by some of the biggest names in golf architecture makes it the most compelling China golf destination for international visitors.

Mission Hills Haikou is the anchor of the island’s golf reputation. With 10 courses designed by a roster of major champions and architects including Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, David Leadbetter, Annika Sorenstam, and Vijay Singh, it holds the Guinness World Record as the largest golf club in the world. The Blackstone Course, played through black lava rock fields left by the island’s volcanic history, is the most visually distinctive and the one most serious golfers prioritise. The variety across 10 layouts within a single complex is unmatched anywhere in Asia.

Shanqin Bay Golf Club in Wanning on the east coast is a different proposition entirely: a coastal links-style layout that has appeared in multiple global top-100 rankings and draws comparisons to the best seaside courses in the world. The exposure to the South China Sea wind, the natural dune terrain, and the routing along the coastline give it a character that the inland resort courses at Mission Hills can’t replicate.

Other courses across the island, including those around Sanya’s Yalong Bay and Shenzhou Peninsula, add further variety across the southern resort corridor.

Green fees range from accessible to premium depending on the venue, and the year-round tropical climate means Hainan avoids the seasonal restrictions that limit golf in mainland China.

Hainan Golf Guide: Where to Play, When to Go, and How to Plan a Hainan Golf Holiday

Hainan is China’s tropical island province in the South China Sea, and it is the country’s most concentrated golf destination by any measure. More than fifteen courses operate across the island, anchored by Mission Hills Haikou in the north, the largest golf resort in Asia according to the club, with ten 18-hole Schmidt-Curley-designed courses built on black volcanic lava rock. The rest of the island adds courses that compete credibly by international standards: Shanqin Bay Golf Club on the east coast is a Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design cited among the top courses in Asia; Sanya Begonia Bay Peninsula Golf Club measures 8,091 yards with a slope of 139, one of the longer course specifications in any tropical destination; The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula West Course is a Tom Weiskopf and Phil Smith design at 7,484 yards and slope 137 with beachfront character. The combination of volume, architect credentials, and tropical beach setting gives Hainan a standing in Asian golf comparable to Phuket or Bali but with a scale that neither island matches.

China’s central government has designated Hainan as a free trade port, and China’s Ministry of Commerce notes the island’s ongoing development as an international tourism and commerce hub. That designation gives Hainan’s golf infrastructure a different investment context from the typical provincial resort: these are courses built to attract international visitors to a strategic development zone, not just to serve a domestic weekend market. The golf quality reflects that intent.

Hainan suits dedicated golf groups building a seven to ten day program across Mission Hills and the east coast courses, Chinese mainland visitors escaping winter for tropical golf, and international visitors who want a China-based golf holiday with a tropical beach setting rather than a metropolitan program.

Best golf courses in Hainan

Nine courses are listed in the GolfLux database. Five form the core visiting program.

1. Mission Hills Haikou

Mission Hills Haikou is the largest golf resort in Asia according to the club, with ten 18-hole courses designed by Brian Curley of Schmidt Curley Design, located in Longhua District, Haikou in northern Hainan. The Blackstone Course, built on volcanic basalt lava fields, is the most cited individual layout and the most visually distinctive, with the black lava rock framing every hole and giving the course a geological character unavailable anywhere else in China. The ten-course format means golfers staying at Mission Hills can cover a different layout every day for ten consecutive days without repeating a round.

It suits dedicated golf groups who want the maximum volume available in a single Chinese resort, golfers who specifically want to experience the volcanic lava course character of Blackstone, and anyone building a complete Hainan multi-venue program who wants Mission Hills as the primary base.

2. Shanqin Bay Golf Club

Shanqin Bay Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 71 layout measuring 6,901 yards, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, located on the cliffs of Hainan Island’s east coast in Wanning according to the club. The Coore and Crenshaw design pedigree is significant: the same firm designed Bandon Dunes in Oregon and Cabot Cliffs in Nova Scotia, and they consistently produce layouts that work with natural topography rather than imposing structure on it. The clifftop coastal setting in Wanning gives the course a playing atmosphere specific to the east coast.

It suits golfers who specifically want the Coore and Crenshaw design approach and the clifftop coastal character, and as the strongest single course to add to a Mission Hills program on the Hainan circuit.

3. The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula West Course

The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula West Course is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 7,484 yards with a slope of 137, designed by Tom Weiskopf and Phil Smith, located at the Shenzhou Peninsula resort in Wanning according to the club. The beachfront character with ocean views from numerous holes, combined with the Weiskopf design and the 7,484-yard length, makes it one of the most complete coastal golf experiences in China. The East Course, also at Shenzhou Peninsula, measures 7,258 yards with a slope of 131 and was designed by Tom Weiskopf, giving the venue a 36-hole Weiskopf program.

4. Sanya Begonia Bay Peninsula Golf Club

Sanya Begonia Bay Peninsula Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 8,091 yards with a slope of 139, located in the Haitang Bay development zone in Sanya according to the club. At 8,091 yards it is one of the longest courses in Asia, and the slope of 139 confirms the challenge is not only about yardage. The Begonia Bay coastal development in Haitang District, which houses a cluster of international luxury hotel brands, positions it within the most premium resort zone on the island.

Which course is better?

Mission Hills Haikou is the unambiguous anchor for any Hainan golf program by volume and by the volcanic Blackstone Course experience. Shanqin Bay is the choice for Coore and Crenshaw design and clifftop character. Shenzhou Peninsula West is the beachfront Weiskopf design option. Sanya Begonia Bay delivers the maximum yardage challenge. Most seven to ten day Hainan programs cover two or three Mission Hills courses alongside Shanqin Bay and one of the Sanya or Lingshui coast options.

Best time to play golf in Hainan

Hainan has a tropical climate and China’s National Tourism Administration notes the island is warmer than the mainland year-round, with the main tourism season from October through April.

October to April is the most comfortable window. Temperatures are around 22 to 28 degrees Celsius, the northeast monsoon brings some rainfall to the east coast in November and December but leaves the western areas around Haikou drier, and the beach resorts in Sanya are at their most active. This is peak season for both domestic Chinese tourism and the golf market, and Mission Hills and the Sanya courses see their highest demand.

May to September is the wet season and tropical typhoon period. The island is in the South China Sea typhoon track from June through October, and direct typhoon landfalls can close courses and disrupt travel for several days at a time. Morning rounds between typhoon events remain possible, but building schedule flexibility into a wet season Hainan visit is sensible. Green fees drop noticeably in this period.

Hainan golf holidays and package tours

Hainan suits five to ten day dedicated golf programs. Haikou Meilan International Airport in the north serves the Mission Hills resort and the east coast courses, with direct flights from major Chinese cities. Sanya Phoenix International Airport serves the Sanya and Lingshui south coast courses, also with direct connections from major Chinese cities and some international services. The island’s north-to-south distance is about 220 kilometers, which takes about three hours by highway, making a north-to-south itinerary covering Mission Hills and the Sanya courses practical with one accommodation change.

Practical package formats:

5 days Hainan golf package with four rounds including Mission Hills Blackstone, Shanqin Bay, and Shenzhou Peninsula

6 days Hainan golf package with five rounds covering the north and east coast circuits

7 days Hainan golf package with six rounds combining Mission Hills, east coast, and Sanya area courses

10 days Hainan golf package with nine rounds for dedicated multi-course programs

Hainan’s beach resort infrastructure in Sanya, particularly along Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay, is among the most developed in China for international-standard beach holidays. Non-golfing partners based at the Sanya resort strip have a full independent program of beach, spa, duty-free shopping at the Haitang Bay International Duty-Free Shopping Complex, and water sports without any golf coordination. Browse Hainan golf packages or create a custom Hainan itinerary that covers Mission Hills and the east and south coast courses.

Golf with Mission Hills and Hainan’s tropical coast

Mission Hills Haikou’s ten courses on volcanic basalt terrain represent the most unusual geological golf setting in China. The Blackstone Course specifically uses the lava rock formations as natural bunkers and hazards, and the visual of black volcanic stone against the tropical green fairways is specific to this site. The Mission Hills complex also includes a hot spring spa resort, the Haikou Volcano World Geopark adjacent to the property, and the Shilu Range, an area of volcanic geology that China’s geological authority notes as one of the most significant volcanic fields in Hainan. The geopark visit adds a natural science dimension to the Mission Hills stay that is directly connected to the course’s unusual playing surface.

Sanya’s resort strip on the southern coast, centered on Yalong Bay, Sanya Bay, and Haitang Bay, is the closest equivalent China has to a Bali or Phuket integrated beach resort zone. The Haitang Bay International Duty-Free Shopping Complex is one of China’s largest duty-free retail areas according to China’s Ministry of Commerce, and the concentration of international luxury hotel brands along the Yalong Bay beach gives Sanya a resort infrastructure that supports non-golfing partners across multiple days without repetition.

The Wuzhizhou Island day trip from Sanya, accessible by boat from the Haitang Bay area, provides a beach and snorkeling experience on a small island in the South China Sea. The coral reef diving around the island is cited by Hainan’s tourism authority as one of the most accessible underwater environments in southern China, and the island’s clear water and beach bar atmosphere give the day trip a leisure character that complements the more active golf mornings.

Book tee times in Hainan

Mission Hills Haikou fills fastest, particularly the Blackstone Course, during the October through April peak season when mainland Chinese golfers book winter escapes. Booking two to three weeks ahead for Blackstone and the most popular Mission Hills layouts during this window is the practical minimum. Shanqin Bay fills quickly on weekends and should be booked a week ahead. The Sanya courses, including Sanya Begonia Bay is accessible with a week’s advance notice outside of Chinese national holidays.

When organizing a Hainan golf program, confirm Mission Hills and Shanqin Bay as priority bookings for any preferred dates, flight logistics into either Haikou or Sanya depending on the program structure, accommodation at Mission Hills resort for the north program or at a Sanya beach hotel for the south program, and how the drive between the north and south of the island connects the two zones within the overall schedule. Start planning here or view all Hainan golf packages to find a program that covers the full island circuit.

Frequently asked questions about golf in Hainan

Hainan is genuinely playable year-round, which is its main advantage over mainland China golf destinations. October through April is the cooler and drier half of the year, with temperatures between 20°C and 28°C in the south around Sanya, and conditions that make full-day golf comfortable. May through September is hotter and wetter, with typhoons most likely from August through October. The lava rock courses at Mission Hills Haikou are more exposed and can be very hot during summer afternoons, so early morning rounds are advisable from June through September. Shanqin Bay on the east coast can be windier than the south-facing Sanya area throughout the year.

Hainan has two main airports. Haikou Meilan International Airport in the north serves Mission Hills Haikou and the northern courses, with direct flights from Beijing (approximately 3 hours), Shanghai (approximately 2.5 hours), and Guangzhou (approximately 1 hour). Sanya Phoenix International Airport in the south serves the Yalong Bay and Shenzhou Peninsula courses. Some international routes connect directly to Sanya. For Shanqin Bay in Wanning, either airport is an option, with transfer times of about 1.5 to 2 hours by road from each. GolfLux can coordinate airport transfers and course routing based on your specific itinerary.

Green fees across Hainan range widely. Mission Hills Haikou courses vary by layout, with signature courses like Blackstone at the premium end and the more standard layouts more accessible. Shanqin Bay is premium-priced given its global ranking and coastal character. Courses in the Sanya resort corridor vary from mid-range to premium. Contact GolfLux for current pricing across specific courses and for package options. Multi-round Mission Hills packages offer significantly better value than booking individual rounds, particularly for golfers planning to play three or more layouts during the stay.

Hainan’s non-golf offering centres on its beaches and resort infrastructure. Yalong Bay in Sanya is consistently ranked among China’s best beaches, with clear water and a palm-lined shoreline. Da Donghai Bay and Sanya Bay have more accessible beach areas closer to the city. The Nanshan Buddhist Cultural Park at the southern tip of the island has a 108-metre sea-facing Guanyin statue that is a significant pilgrimage site. The Miao and Li ethnic minority villages in the central highlands around Tongshi offer a different cultural perspective from the coastal resort environment. The Haikou old town (Qilou Street) in the north has well-preserved 20th-century shophouse architecture from the Nanyang trading era.
