Hoi An is about 30 kilometres south of Da Nang, but it feels like a completely different destination. Where Da Nang is a modern coastal city with six courses and international airport infrastructure, Hoi An is a preserved UNESCO World Heritage trading port with lantern-lit streets, centuries-old architecture, and a food scene that many travelers consider the best in Vietnam. The golf here is smaller in scale but high in quality, with three courses in the immediate area and easy access to the Da Nang courses further north.
The town sits in Quang Nam Province on the Thu Bon River. Most international travelers arrive through Da Nang International Airport and transfer to Hoi An in about 40 minutes. The courses closest to Hoi An are Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An, Hoiana Shores Golf Club, and The Point Da Nang Golf Club, all within a short drive. Montgomerie Links, positioned between Da Nang and Hoi An, is also practical from a Hoi An base. That gives you up to four courses without long transfers, which is plenty for a three to five day trip.
Hoi An suits golfers who prefer to stay in a culturally interesting town rather than a modern city, couples where the non-golfer wants genuine sightseeing and food experiences, and travelers who want to combine golf with the kind of walking, shopping, and eating that Hoi An does better than almost anywhere in Vietnam.
Best golf courses in Hoi An
Hoi An has three courses in its immediate area. All are coastal or near-coastal layouts, which gives the golf here a consistent seaside character.
1. Hoiana Shores Golf Club
According to GolfLux course information, Hoiana Shores Golf Club is an 18-hole par 71 course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, located about 8 kilometres from Hoi An along the coastline. Publicly available golf travel sources describe it as a links-style layout with rolling dunes and ocean views.
This is the first RTJ Jr design in Vietnam, and the links character is genuine. Coastal winds add complexity to most rounds, and the dune terrain creates natural elevation changes that make the course feel less manufactured than many resort layouts. The clubhouse reportedly includes dining and a pro shop with views of the sea.
Hoiana Shores suits golfers who want a proper links test close to Hoi An, and travelers staying at the Hoiana resort complex who want on-site golf.
2. Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An
According to GolfLux course information, Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An is an 18-hole par 71 course measuring 7,004 yards, designed by IMG. It is located within the Vinpearl Nam Hoi An Resort and Spa complex in Duy Xuyen District, which includes a 5-star hotel, villas, a water park, and a theme park.
The course runs through rolling dunes with elevation changes between 4 and 11 metres. Casuarina pine trees line some of the coastal holes, and the course has a large number of bunkers, including a particularly notable one on the first hole. The design is described as accessible but deceptive: the layout looks straightforward, but the bunker placement and sand areas require accurate tee shots.
Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An suits families and resort-oriented travelers who want golf as part of a broader leisure package, and golfers who prefer a course where the fairways are wide but the strategy comes from bunker positioning.
3. The Point Da Nang Golf Club
According to GolfLux course information, The Point Da Nang Golf Club is an 18-hole par 72 course measuring 7,160 yards, designed by Greg Norman. Located in Thang Binh, Quang Nam Province, it is accessible from Hoi An within a reasonable drive.
The Greg Norman design runs alongside the beach in parts and through tropical terrain in others. At 7,160 yards from the tips it is the longest of the Hoi An-accessible courses, making it a good choice for golfers who want a bit more yardage and challenge.
Which course is better?
If you want the strongest links character and the RTJ Jr name, Hoiana Shores is the pick. If you want a resort experience with on-site accommodation and family-friendly facilities, Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An is more practical. The Point gives you a Greg Norman design with extra length. For a three or four day Hoi An golf trip, playing two or three of these courses, with a sightseeing day in between, is the right pacing.
Best time to play golf in Hoi An
Hoi An shares Da Nang’s climate pattern. Vietnam’s official tourism information describes the dry season as running from February to August, with the rainy season from September to January.
February to May. The best window. Temperatures range from about 22 to 30 degrees Celsius, humidity is manageable, and rainfall is minimal. The courses are in top condition, and the weather works well for both golf and walking the ancient town in the evenings. This is also the busiest tourist period, so book tee times and accommodation early.
June to August. Still good for golf, though heat builds through this period. Morning rounds are more comfortable. The beaches are at their best, and the town stays lively. Late afternoon tee times work if you prefer cooler conditions and good light for photography.
September to November. The rainy season. Hoi An can experience serious flooding in October and November, particularly in the low-lying old town area. Golf is possible between rain events, but scheduling needs to be flexible. Green fees tend to drop, which can make it a budget-friendly window if you accept the weather risk.
December to January. Cooler and transitioning out of the wet season. January is often drier than the preceding months. Temperatures drop to the low 20s, which is comfortable for golf. The town is quieter and hotel rates are lower.
Hoi An golf holidays and package tours
Hoi An works well as a three to five day golf programme, either on its own or combined with Da Nang courses for a longer trip. The short transfer from Da Nang airport means you can be on the course or in the ancient town within an hour of landing.
A typical Hoi An golf package includes boutique hotel or resort accommodation in Hoi An or at one of the coastal resorts, airport transfers from Da Nang, tee times at two or three courses, caddie and cart, and usually a half-day ancient town visit or a cooking class.
Some available packages and ideas on GolfLux:
Hoi An is arguably the best golf destination in Vietnam for non-golfing travel companions. The ancient town has enough to fill several days on its own: tailor shops, art galleries, the Japanese Covered Bridge, Chinese assembly halls, riverside cafes, cooking classes, and a food scene that runs from early-morning banh mi stalls to lantern-lit riverside restaurants in the evening. While the golfer plays 18 holes, the non-golfer has no shortage of things to do.
Golf with ancient town and coastal travel in Hoi An
This is where Hoi An earns its place as a distinct golf destination rather than just an appendix to Da Nang. The Hoi An Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a remarkably well-preserved trading port that was active from the 15th to 19th centuries. The architecture mixes Japanese, Chinese, and European influences in a way that you do not see anywhere else in Vietnam. In the evening, the old town lights up with silk lanterns and becomes one of the most photographed scenes in the country.
The food alone justifies the trip. Cao lau, a noodle dish made with water from a specific local well, is only available in Hoi An. The banh mi here is widely considered the best in Vietnam. Com ga Hoi An (chicken rice) and white rose dumplings are local specialties you will not find done the same way elsewhere. For many travelers, the eating in Hoi An is as memorable as the golf.
An Hang Beach and Cua Dai Beach are both close to town and offer a quieter alternative to Da Nang’s busier My Khe Beach. The Tra Que vegetable village, a short bike ride from the old town, runs cooking classes that are popular with couples and families.
A practical four-day itinerary: arrive from Da Nang airport, explore the ancient town on the first evening. Day two, play Hoiana Shores in the morning, beach in the afternoon. Day three, morning cooking class or Tra Que village visit, play Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An in the afternoon. Day four, play Montgomerie Links (between Hoi An and Da Nang) on the way to the airport, or take a free morning in the old town before departure.
Book tee times in Hoi An
Booking tee times from a Hoi An base is straightforward, but the courses are spread across a wider area than in a compact city destination. Transfer times between your hotel and the course matter, so coordinate tee times with your accommodation location.
When booking, confirm:
- Which courses you want to play
- Your ideal dates and tee times
- Morning versus afternoon preference
- Whether you need club rental
- Cart and caddie arrangements
- Transfer from your Hoi An hotel to each course
- Whether you want to include any Da Nang courses (Montgomerie Links, BRG Da Nang) from your Hoi An base
- Ancient town tour or cooking class scheduling, to avoid overlap with tee times
One practical note: if you are staying in the heart of the ancient town, the transfer to Hoiana Shores is about 15 to 20 minutes, while Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An is slightly further south. Montgomerie Links, between Hoi An and Da Nang, takes about 20 to 30 minutes. None of these transfers are long, but scheduling matters if you want to fit in a morning round and an afternoon town visit on the same day. Early tee times (before 7:30am) leave you plenty of time to get back to town for a late lunch at one of the banh mi shops, which is not a bad way to spend the second half of a golf day.
