Langkawi Golf Courses: Book Tee Times & Play Malaysia's Best Island Golf in 2026/2027

Langkawi has three golf courses, and in a country with more than 200, that number doesn’t sound like much. But the quality here is disproportionate to the count, and The Els Club Teluk Datai alone is worth travelling to Malaysia specifically to play.

Designed by Ernie Els, The Els Club Teluk Datai is set in a 10-million-year-old rainforest in the northwest corner of the island, where fairways wind between ancient trees, over streams, and through terrain that feels genuinely wild. The routing keeps the rainforest in play throughout, and the wildlife encounters, hornbills, macaques, and monitor lizards are regular rather than incidental. It’s consistently ranked among the top courses in Asia, and the combination of design intelligence and natural setting earns that standing. The adjacent Four Seasons resort and The Datai Langkawi make it one of the most complete golf-and-stay packages in the region.

Gunung Raya Golf Resort offers a different kind of experience, playing across the slopes of the island’s highest mountain with elevation changes that make club selection unpredictable in ways that flatter layouts never do. The views over the Andaman Sea from the higher holes are among the best of any course in Malaysia.

99 East Golf Club is the newest course on the island and brings a contrasting style: open links-style holes along the beachfront give way to tighter jungle sections, mixing two very different playing environments in a single round.

Green fees on Langkawi benefit from the island’s duty-free status, which keeps the overall trip cost more manageable than the course quality might suggest.

Langkawi Golf Guide: Where to Play, When to Go, and How to Combine Golf with the Andaman Island

Langkawi is a UNESCO Global Geopark island in the Andaman Sea, 30 kilometers off the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, and it has the most distinctive golf setting of any Malaysian destination. Three courses serve the island, all 18 holes, all in different parts of the island’s varied terrain. The GolfLux page describes The Els Club Teluk Datai, the island’s flagship course, as one of the best courses in Malaysia, with fairways winding between wide rainforests and over winding streams where every hole feels like an adventure and wildlife accompanies the round throughout. That description is accurate. The Datai Bay headland where the course sits preserves primary rainforest that predates organized human settlement in the area, and the combination of the Ernie Els design, the intact forest, and the Andaman Sea views makes it one of the most internationally recognized golf experiences in Southeast Asia.

The island has three courses. The Els Club Teluk Datai is the clear headline at 6,750 yards through the primary rainforest and beside the sea at Datai Bay. Gunung Raya Golf Resort covers 300 acres at the foothills of Gunung Raya, Langkawi’s highest mountain, for a mountain-and-forest round at 6,377 yards. 99 East Golf Club, previously known as The Langkawi Golf Club and rebuilt after a complete makeover, measures 7,300 yards with a mix of jungle-framed and open links-style beachfront holes. Three courses with three genuinely different characters on a single island is unusual for any destination in this region.

Beyond the golf, Langkawi is a duty-free island with direct international flights from KL, Singapore, and regional hubs, an established resort hotel sector across Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, and Datai Bay, and the geopark landscape that justified the UNESCO designation covering ancient geological formations 550 million years old.

Langkawi suits golfers who specifically want to play The Els Club as a destination round, couples combining an island holiday with two or three courses of genuinely different character, and Malaysia circuit visitors who add Langkawi as the final stop before flying home.

Best golf courses in Langkawi

  1. The Els Club Teluk Datai

The Els Club Teluk Datai is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,750 yards, designed by Ernie Els, located at Jalan Datai in the northwestern corner of Langkawi according to the club. The course runs through primary rainforest and past the Andaman Sea at Datai Bay, with mountain peaks visible and wildlife, including macaques, hornbills, and monitor lizards, regularly encountered along the fairways. The GolfLux page describes it as the crown jewel of Langkawi golf, and the Ernie Els design credential reinforces that standing.

It is the first course most international golfers come to Langkawi to play, and it suits all handicap levels given the multiple tee options, though the experience is genuinely memorable regardless of how you score.

  1. Gunung Raya Golf Resort

Gunung Raya Golf Resort is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,377 yards, spread over 300 acres at the foothills of Gunung Raya in Kisap according to the club. The mountain backdrop and the enclosed forested setting give it a different playing atmosphere from the coastal Els Club. The layout is described as one of the most scenic golf resorts on the island, and the elevation change from the Gunung Raya foothills creates genuine terrain variety across the 18 holes.

It suits golfers who want a mountain-and-forest contrast round after the Els Club coastal experience, and as the natural second playing day for a two-round Langkawi program.

  1. 99 East Golf Club

99 East Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 7,300 yards with a slope of 121, the original and oldest course on Langkawi before its complete makeover according to the club. The GolfLux page describes limited, undulating gaps covered with dense jungle for several holes and open links-style holes located on the beachfront at the other end of the course. That split character, jungle and links on the same routing, is unusual for a Malaysian course at any yardage. At 7,300 yards it is also the longest course on the island.

It suits golfers who want the maximum length challenge available on Langkawi, and those who want a third distinct experience after covering Els Club and Gunung Raya.

Which course is better?

The Els Club is the island’s defining golf experience and the first booking for any Langkawi visit. Gunung Raya is the mountain contrast for a second day. 99 East adds the length challenge and the links-jungle split character for a third round. A three-round Langkawi program covering all three gives genuinely different golf environments without repeating terrain.

Best time to play golf in Langkawi

Langkawi’s northwestern Andaman Sea position means the southwest monsoon from May through September brings rain primarily to the island’s northeastern side, while the Datai Bay and western coast where Els Club is located are somewhat more sheltered. Malaysia’s Tourism Authority notes November through April as the driest period for Langkawi.

November to April is the most reliable window. Morning rounds are clear, the Andaman Sea is calm for water activities, and the forest at Datai Bay is at its most vivid. December through February is peak Langkawi season and accommodation books well ahead, particularly at the Datai Bay resorts adjacent to Els Club.

May to October brings more frequent afternoon rain and somewhat rougher sea conditions. Morning rounds at all three courses remain generally playable. The island is noticeably less crowded, and accommodation rates drop significantly. The duty-free shopping advantage is year-round regardless of weather.

Early morning tee times before 7:30am are the standard approach year-round at Els Club specifically, where the wildlife along the fairways is most active in the early hours before the heat builds.

Langkawi golf holidays and package tours

Langkawi suits four to seven day programs built around two or three rounds combined with beach days, the UNESCO Geopark attractions, and the duty-free retail. Langkawi International Airport has direct connections from KL on Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air taking about one hour. Direct services from Singapore take about one hour and 45 minutes. The ferry from Penang’s Swettenham Pier takes about two and a half hours as a practical sea-crossing alternative for golfers routing through northern Malaysia.

Most Langkawi golf packages cover resort or hotel accommodation across Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, or the Datai Bay area, tee times with caddie at the chosen courses, and private island transfers between the accommodation base and the courses. The island is about 45 minutes across from Pantai Cenang to Datai Bay, which is a relevant consideration when planning the daily schedule.

Practical package formats:

7 days golf in Langkawi, Kedah with three rounds across all Langkawi courses, island resort accommodation, geopark activities, from USD 980 per person

9 days golf in Kedah and Penang combining Langkawi rounds with Penang mainland courses for a northern Malaysia circuit, from USD 1,145 per person

10 days KL and Langkawi combined with KL metropolitan rounds at Saujana and TPC followed by a Langkawi island extension, from USD 2,150 per person

Langkawi provides one of the most naturally complete island holiday programs in Malaysia. Pantai Cenang’s beach strip has the highest concentration of restaurants, beach bars, and water sports operators. The Langkawi cable car and SkyBridge above the Machinchang Geoforest Park, the Kilim Karst Geoforest boat tour through mangrove waterways, and the duty-free retail at Kuah town give non-golfing partners a full independent program across a week without any repetition. Browse Kedah golf packages which cover the Langkawi courses, or create a custom Langkawi itinerary that combines all three courses with the island’s geopark experience.

Golf with Langkawi’s UNESCO Geopark and the Andaman Sea

Langkawi was Malaysia’s first UNESCO Global Geopark, designated in 2007 for geological formations spanning 550 million years, ancient limestone karsts emerging from mangrove waterways, and Cambrian-era sedimentary layers visible at the Machinchang headland where The Els Club fairways run. The geopark designation is not abstract: the primary rainforest that the Els Club course plays through is part of the Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park, which means the forest has legal protection that would not otherwise exist. That protection is why the front nine of the Els Club can offer a playing experience inside intact primary rainforest rather than a replanted secondary growth approximation.

The Kilim Karst Geoforest Park on the island’s northeastern coast offers the most organized nature-based activity available from any Langkawi base. Boat tours from the Kilim jetty cover the mangrove waterways, the limestone karst formations rising from the water, cave systems with fish colonies, and eagle feeding stations where white-bellied sea eagles catch fish from the surface. The tour takes about two to three hours and works as an afternoon program after a morning round at any of the island’s courses, though the 45-minute drive from Datai Bay to Kilim means building timing into the schedule.

Book tee times in Langkawi

The Els Club Teluk Datai is the most in-demand course and fills during peak season from November through February, particularly over Christmas and New Year week and during Malaysian public holiday periods. Booking two to three weeks ahead for peak season slots is the practical minimum. Gunung Raya and 99 East are generally accessible with a few days’ notice outside of holiday weekends.

When organizing a Langkawi golf trip, confirm Els Club as the priority booking before finalizing the rest of the schedule, flight or ferry logistics into Langkawi International Airport, accommodation in the Datai Bay area for the most convenient Els Club access or at Pantai Cenang for the main beach strip, private transfer arrangements across the island for the Gunung Raya and 99 East rounds, and how the Kilim Karst boat tour and cable car visits align with the playing days. Start planning here or view Kedah golf packages to find a Langkawi program that covers all three courses alongside the island’s geopark experience.

Frequently asked questions about golf in Langkawi

November through April is the dry season on Langkawi’s west coast, where The Els Club Teluk Datai and Gunung Raya are located. These months bring consistently clear mornings, lower humidity, and the best visibility across the Andaman Sea from the mountain and clifftop holes. The southwest monsoon from May through October brings heavier rain to the west coast, though morning rounds are still often playable. 99 East Golf Club on the east side of the island has a slightly different exposure to the monsoon, with better conditions during the southwest monsoon months. The clearest overall window for playing all three courses is December through March.

Langkawi International Airport is in the south of the island. The Els Club Teluk Datai in the northwest corner is about 35 to 40 minutes by road. Gunung Raya Golf Resort is on the east side of the mountain, about 20 to 25 minutes from the airport. 99 East Golf Club is in the north, approximately 30 minutes from the airport. GolfLux can arrange private transfers from the airport to each course and between courses if you’re playing multiple rounds across different days.

Langkawi has enough to fill a full week without the golf. The Langkawi Cable Car at Oriental Village reaches the summit of Gunung Mat Cincang at 708 metres with a sky bridge walk between two peaks that most visitors rate as worth the queuing time. The Kilim Geoforest Park mangrove ecosystem in the northeast of the island is best explored by boat tour, with eagle feeding at sea and cave passages only accessible from the water. Pantai Cenang on the southwest coast is the most developed beach strip, with good seafood restaurants and the duty-free shopping that makes Langkawi a popular destination for Malaysian domestic travellers. Duty-free alcohol pricing specifically makes the island’s bar scene considerably cheaper than the Malaysian mainland.
