Sabah occupies the northern tip of Borneo, bounded by the South China Sea to the west, the Sulu Sea to the northeast, and the Celebes Sea to the southeast. It is the Malaysian state that most international visitors know for Mount Kinabalu, for orangutan sanctuaries, for Sipadan Island diving, and for the Kinabalu Park UNESCO World Heritage Site. Golf is not the primary reason anyone flies to Kota Kinabalu, but Sabah has fifteen courses including a few that are genuinely good, and the combination of a morning round with the wildlife and natural landscape around the city is one of the more distinctive golf travel experiences in Southeast Asia.
The core of the Kota Kinabalu golf circuit is three courses. Sutera Harbour Sabah Malaysia Golf Course is a Graham Marsh-designed 27-hole layout centrally located within the Sutera Harbour Resort complex on the waterfront. Sabah Golf and Country Club at Bukit Padang carries the reputation of one of the toughest courses in Southeast Asia according to the club’s own description, measuring 6,335 meters with a slope of 135. Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai is set between Bornean jungle on one side and the South China Sea on the other, measuring 6,173 yards. Away from KK, Mount Kinabalu Golf Club near Kundasang offers a round with the actual Kinabalu massif as the backdrop at 6,989 yards, and Tawau Golf Club Hot Spring Course in the far southeast of the state carries a slope of 141 making it one of the more demanding provincial layouts in Borneo.
Sabah suits golfers building a Kota Kinabalu program that combines two or three rounds with Kinabalu Park, an orangutan sanctuary visit, and either an island diving day at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park or a longer Sipadan trip for dedicated divers.
Best golf courses in Sabah
Fifteen courses are listed across the state. Five serve the visiting program.
- Sutera Harbour Sabah Malaysia Golf Course
Sutera Harbour Sabah Malaysia Golf Course is a 27-hole, par 108 layout measuring 6,316 meters, designed by Graham Marsh, located within the Sutera Harbour Resort complex in the heart of Kota Kinabalu according to the club. The Graham Marsh design credential connects it to Tropicana Golf and Country Resort in Kuala Lumpur and Fairways and Bluewater in Boracay, and the 27-hole format gives groups multiple nine-hole combinations across different playing days. The central Kota Kinabalu waterfront position within the resort makes it the most convenient golf option for visitors based at Sutera Harbour hotels.
It suits golfers who want a well-designed resort round within walking distance of their accommodation, couples who want to base at Sutera Harbour for the full stay, and any Sabah visitor who wants a quality round without a long transfer.
- Sabah Golf and Country Club
Sabah Golf and Country Club is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,335 meters with a slope of 135, located at Bukit Padang in Kota Kinabalu according to the club. The club’s own description cites it as one of the toughest courses in Southeast Asia, and the slope of 135 on a hillside layout gives genuine credibility to that claim. The Bukit Padang elevation provides views across the city and toward the South China Sea from the upper holes.
It suits experienced low-handicap golfers who want the most technically demanding KK round, and those specifically drawn to a course with a reputation for genuine difficulty.
- Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai
Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,173 yards, located off Jalan Sepangar Bay north of Kota Kinabalu with Bornean jungle on one side and the South China Sea visible on the other according to the club. The dual jungle-and-sea visual context gives it a setting specific to Borneo’s western coastline, and the resort infrastructure makes it a practical stay-and-play option for golfers who want to be away from the city center.
- Mount Kinabalu Golf Club
Mount Kinabalu Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,989 yards with a slope of 123, located in Kundasang, Sabah according to the club. The club’s description notes the course presents a dual challenge owing to its ceaseless winds and steep undulating terrain. At 6,989 yards from a mountain setting with views of Mount Kinabalu’s summit available on clear mornings, it is the most visually distinctive round in Sabah. The Kundasang location, about 90 minutes from Kota Kinabalu on the route to the Kinabalu Park trailheads, makes it practical to combine a morning round with an afternoon at the Kinabalu Park Headquarters visitor center.
- Tawau Golf Club Hot Spring Course
Tawau Golf Club Hot Spring Course is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,161 meters with a slope of 141, located in Tawau in southeastern Sabah according to the club. At slope 141 it is the highest-rated course in the state and one of the more demanding provincial layouts in Malaysia. Tawau is accessible by direct flight from Kota Kinabalu and by road through the interior, and the hot spring area proximity gives the location an additional natural feature.
Which course is better?
Sutera Harbour is the first choice for resort convenience and the Graham Marsh design. Sabah Golf and Country Club is the call for the most demanding KK round. Nexus is the coastal jungle setting option. Mount Kinabalu Golf Club is for golfers who want the mountain backdrop and can make the Kundasang drive. Tawau Hot Spring Course suits golfers who find themselves in the southeastern part of the state. Most Kota Kinabalu programs pair Sutera Harbour and Sabah Golf and Country Club as the two primary city rounds.
Best time to play golf in Sabah
Sabah has a broadly equatorial climate with rain possible year-round, but the western coast around Kota Kinabalu is generally drier than the east coast from March through September. Malaysia’s Tourism Authority notes that Sabah’s best weather period on the western coast is March through September, while the east coast including Semporna and Sipadan diving is most favorable from April through October.
March to September is the most reliable window for Kota Kinabalu golf. Morning rounds are clear, Mount Kinabalu is visible from Kundasang without cloud cover on the best days, and the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park boat trips operate reliably in calm sea conditions.
October to February brings the northeast monsoon to the Sabah coast. Morning rounds at the KK courses remain generally playable, but sea conditions can affect island boat trips and the Mount Kinabalu summit climb has more cloud cover in this period.
Early morning tee times before 7:30am are the standard approach year-round.
Sabah golf holidays and package tours
Sabah suits four to seven day programs built around Kota Kinabalu as the base, with golf filling two or three of the mornings and wildlife, diving, or Mount Kinabalu filling the rest. Kota Kinabalu International Airport has direct connections from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila, and several Chinese cities, making it accessible without routing through the Malaysian peninsula.
Most Sabah golf packages cover KK city hotel or Sutera Harbour resort accommodation, two or three rounds at Sutera Harbour, Sabah Golf and Country Club, and one of the outer courses, and at least one non-golf activity such as a Kinabalu Park visit, an orangutan sanctuary at Sepilok, or a Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park island boat trip.
Practical package formats:
4 days Sabah golf package with three rounds and Kota Kinabalu wildlife and island activities from USD 550 per person
5 days golf in Kota Kinabalu with four rounds across the main KK courses and Kinabalu Park day trip from USD 900 per person
Extended Sabah program: KK base for three rounds and a Kinabalu Park day, domestic flight to Sandakan for Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Kinabatangan River wildlife cruise, return KK for departure
Sabah’s non-golf program is one of the most compelling of any destination in this guide series. The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre adjacent to it, the proboscis monkey colonies along the Kinabatangan River, and the Kinabalu Park trails make Sabah a natural history program of genuine depth. Non-golfing partners who want wildlife rather than a beach have a full independent program that does not depend on golf timing. Browse Sabah golf packages or create a custom Sabah itinerary combining KK golf with the Borneo wildlife circuit.
Golf with Mount Kinabalu and Sabah’s Borneo wildlife
Kinabalu Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 2000 for its exceptional biodiversity and for containing Mount Kinabalu, at 4,095 meters the highest peak between the Himalayas and New Guinea according to UNESCO. The park is accessible from the Park Headquarters at Kundasang, about 90 minutes from Kota Kinabalu, and the same road passes Mount Kinabalu Golf Club. A practical combined day covers a morning round at the golf club, lunch at the Kundasang market, and an afternoon walk at the Kinabalu Park Headquarters trails and visitor center, returning to KK by evening. The summit climb itself requires two days and advance booking of the mountain lodge, making it a separate dedicated program rather than a golf-trip add-on.
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sandakan, the largest town on Sabah’s east coast, is the most internationally recognized wildlife facility in Malaysian Borneo. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation manages the rehabilitation program, and the twice-daily feeding platform sessions allow observation of semi-wild orangutans at close range. The center is a two-hour drive from Kota Kinabalu or accessible by direct domestic flight from KK to Sandakan. The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre next door runs a similar program for sun bears, the world’s smallest bear species.
The Kinabatangan River in eastern Sabah, accessible from Sukau village east of Sandakan, is the most reliable location for multi-species Borneo wildlife sightings outside a nature reserve. Twice-daily boat trips along the river regularly produce proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, crocodiles, hornbills, and occasionally orangutans. Overnight lodges in the Sukau area keep guests within the wildlife corridor for morning and evening boat trips, making a two-night Kinabatangan stay the most immersive single wildlife experience available in Sabah.
Book tee times in Sabah
Sutera Harbour and Sabah Golf and Country Club are the most in-demand KK courses and should be booked a week ahead for weekend slots. Mount Kinabalu Golf Club is accessible with shorter notice given the Kundasang location away from the main KK weekend market. Nexus Karambunai and the Sandakan and Tawau courses are generally open with a few days’ notice.
When organizing a Sabah golf program, confirm tee times at Sutera Harbour and Sabah Golf and Country Club as priority bookings, accommodation at Sutera Harbour for on-site convenience or a KK city hotel for the most flexible access to both courses and the waterfront, transfer logistics for the Kundasang drive if Mount Kinabalu Golf Club is in the program, and how the Kinabalu Park, Sepilok, or Tunku Abdul Rahman boat trips align with the playing days. Start planning here or view Sabah golf packages to find a program that covers the KK courses alongside Borneo’s wildlife.
