I’ve played there in a number of different seasons, and I can tell you that autumn (September to November) is definitely the best time to hit the fairways. The weather is pleasantly cool, the skies are often clear, and the humidity drops just enough to make walking the golf courses a breeze. Spring (March to May) is also a great option, with mild temperatures and blooming flowers adding a touch of charm to your game.

Explore the Wuyi Mountains

Wuyi Mountain, one of the most beautiful mountains in China
Wuyi Mountain is the standout range in Southeast China and it’s only a short 15-kilometer trip from the city center. UNESCO actually protects the area as a World Heritage site because the ecosystem is so well-preserved. The landscape is defined by massive cliffs and hidden caves that force the river into nine sharp bends, which looks great if you can get to a high enough vantage point. It’s also a massive hub for biodiversity, with tens of thousands of different plant and animal species living across the range.
If you’re heading out there, the best way to see it is by hiking or trekking the trails that cut through the peaks. It’s the easiest way to see the sheer scale of the cliffs and catch a glimpse of the local wildlife. You also shouldn’t leave without trying the Tieguanyin tea. It’s grown locally on the mountain and has a very specific flavor that’s famous all over China. It’s a nice way to end a day of hiking, just sitting back and having a cup while you take in the fresh air.

Some practical tips for your Fujian golf trip
Having played a few rounds of golf around the region and learned from both wins and losses, I’ve come up with some useful tips to help you make the most of your Fujian golf trip, both on and off the course.
- Timing your trip: Avoid major holidays like New Year or Golden Week in early October. You’ll struggle to find a tee time, and you’ll pay double for a hotel room. Plus, courses often close for private tournaments during these times. It is worth double-checking the dates so you don’t get stuck with no place to play.
- Booking your rounds: Most courses in Fujian don’t have English booking systems, which makes it a hassle to do it yourself. Your best is to use a local agent. They cant get the tee times and transport sorted out so you aren’t stuck trying to navigate a website that doesn’t work for you.
- Rental clubs: If you aren’t traveling with your clubs, don’t assume the course has a great selection. Rental sets are often limited, and if you play left-handed, they might not have anything for you at all. Call or message them a few days before you play to see what they actually have in stock.
- Gear to bring: The coastal weather changes fast, so keep a light jacket or an umbrella in your bag. Spikeless shoes are the way to go here. They are allowed at every course, and you can wear them straight into the bar or hotel without having to change.
- Cash and apps: China is almost entirely cashless now. You’ll need Alipay or WeChat Pay to tip your caddie or buy a drink at the halfway house. Many spots have stopped taking foreign cards entirely, so if you haven’t set up the apps, make sure you have plenty of local cash on hand.
- Expect a slower day: The game moves at a different speed in China. It is more formal, and there is a mandatory lunch break after nine holes. Even if you want to play straight through, you’ll likely be asked to sit down for a meal. Just take the break, chat with your group, and don’t try to rush the pace. It is a long day, so just enjoy the scenery.
