Germiston Golf Club

If you want to play golf in Gauteng without paying exorbitant private estate fees, Germiston Golf Club is one of those historic tracks locals have quietly defended for over a century. Founded in 1897 right on the edge of Victoria Lake, it doesn’t have the manufactured flash of the newer Golf Courses in Gauteng. It is an old-school, municipal-style club that focuses purely on the golf.

The 18-hole, par-72 parkland layout leans into a traditional “Old English” design. You get flat, highly walkable kikuyu fairways that let the ball run, paired with small bent grass greens that actively punish sloppy approach shots. At 6,523 meters from the back tees, it isn’t exceptionally long by modern standards. However, the mature, tree-lined doglegs and clever bunker placements provide plenty of natural defense against big hitters trying to overpower the layout.

Victoria Lake dominates the signature holes. The 18th, in particular, is a brutal par-3 to finish your round. You have to hit a long iron entirely over the water into the prevailing wind, aiming at a putting surface that looks painfully small from the tee box. It is the kind of hole where you are just as likely to lose a ball as you are to salvage a par.

Inside, the clubhouse drops all pretension. It is a straightforward local bar where you can grab a beer and a meal after walking the course. The pro shop covers the essentials, and the practice facilities give you enough space to warm up your swing. The club has had to fight through some serious municipal funding battles and liquidation threats over the last few years, but the membership and greens staff keep the track in surprisingly solid condition. It remains an absolute staple among Gauteng Golf Courses.
