Macau Golf and Country Club

Macau Golf and Country Club opened in 1993 on Coloane Island, in the southeastern corner of what was once a separate island before land reclamation connected it to the wider Macau peninsula. The address is 1918 Estrada de Hac Sa — a quiet coastal road that feels deliberately removed from the casino density of Cotai, despite being only 15 minutes away by car.

The course plays 18 holes to par 71 across 6,624 yards from the championship tees, with a rating of 71.7 and a slope of 131. It is a private club, open to members and guests staying at the Grand Coloane Resort. Visiting golfers not staying on site should contact the pro shop in advance to confirm playing options. Golf carts are compulsory and caddies are available.

Course Overview

The routing runs through tree-lined jungle terrain on the upper sections of Coloane and opens out along the shoreline on several holes, particularly on the back nine. That shift in terrain — from enclosed, tree-canopied fairways inland to exposed coastal holes where the South China Sea is directly in play — gives the course two distinct characters within the same round. The elevation changes are significant throughout, with multiple uphill and downhill approaches that make yardage books less reliable than they would be on a flat layout. Blind shots to greens appear on several holes, and the coastal wind becomes a genuine variable as you move into the second half of the round.

Three holes in particular define the experience. Hole 6 is a par 3 of around 138 yards to an island green surrounded by water, with three bunkers short providing partial relief but no guarantee of safety when the wind shifts. Club selection here is genuinely difficult, and it is the hole most first-time visitors underestimate. Hole 17 plays from an elevated tee over 238 yards, with the South China Sea to the left and cliffs and scrubland to the right — there is essentially no safe miss. Hole 18 is a par 5 that runs directly along the shoreline to a water-defended green, reachable in two for players willing to carry the sea on their second shot. It has produced memorable finishes at the Macau Open and is the hole most people recall long after the round.

The club has hosted the Macau Open on the Asian Tour since 1998, with early winners including Colin Montgomerie and Lianwei Zhang. Golf Digest named it Macau’s No.1 course in 2022. The driving range includes a bay for hitting balls directly into the South China Sea, which is either a novelty or a genuine warm-up depending on how seriously you take it. The clubhouse facilities — spa, massage rooms, sauna, seaview terrace, and restaurant — are well maintained and genuinely useful after a round on hilly terrain.

For golfers building a Macau golf itinerary, this is the only course on Coloane Island worth the trip on its own merits. The combination of competitive history, coastal routing, and resort infrastructure makes it the clearest reason to factor golf into a Macau visit.
