National Golf Country Club

National Golf Country Club opened in 1995 in Yuanli Township, Miaoli County, about two hours south of Taipei by train, close to Yuanli Railway Station. The course sits near Huoyan Mountain, a landmark ridge in the area, and the fairways roll across 115 hectares of hilly terrain with the Taiwan Strait visible in the distance on clear days. It is one of the more distinctive settings for golf in Taiwan, and the course has consistently ranked among the top five in the country.

The layout plays to par 72 across 7,014 yards, with a slope of 135. Fairways are Champion Dwarf Bermuda Grass and greens are Champion Turf Grass, the same specifications used on US and European Tour events which contributes to the course’s reputation for fast, demanding putting surfaces.

Course Overview

The terrain does most of the work here. Fairways run across and between hills rather than following flat lines, which means elevation changes are a constant factor in club selection. Downhill lies, uphill approaches, and sidehill stances appear regularly enough through the round that golfers who rely on a flat swing plane tend to leak shots by the back nine.

Three lakes are positioned around the course and come into play on a handful of holes. None of them are purely decorative, each one sits where it can genuinely influence shot selection, particularly on approach shots where the bail-out zone either disappears or shortens significantly. The wide fairways give you room off the tee, but the challenge tightens as you get closer to the green.

The greens live up to the course’s reputation for pace. Champion Turf runs quick year-round, and the slopes built into several putting surfaces mean that leaving the ball above the hole is a consistent problem for first-time visitors. Local caddies are available and worth taking on a first round here. The green reads are not always what they appear from the front of the putting surface.

One feature that sets National GCC apart from most courses in the region is the ten bronze sculptures by Taiwanese artist Yang Ying-feng placed throughout the course. They are integrated into the landscape rather than positioned as decoration at the clubhouse, and they give the round a quieter, more considered atmosphere than the yardage and slope numbers alone might suggest.

The course is playable year-round thanks to Miaoli’s mild climate, and the resort hotel on site makes it a practical stay-and-play option for golfers looking at Taiwan golf packages who want to spend more than one day at the same property.
