Worcester Golf Club

Worcester Golf Club was founded in 1895, making it the third oldest club in the Western Cape. The course itself opened on April 30, 1988, designed by Peter Matkovich while working under Gary Player Design and sits at 22 Kolie Nelson Road, 112 kilometers from Cape Town along the N1 highway at the start of the Klein Karoo. The Brandwacht Mountains form the backdrop across the full layout, with views over Worcester and the Breede River Valley available from most holes on the property.

The layout plays 18 holes to par 72 across 5,711 yards. Greens are bent grass and fairways are Kikuyu a combination that holds up well in the dry heat of the Boland region and accounts for the consistently firm, fast putting surfaces the course is known for. No official slope or rating is publicly listed.

Course Overview

Matkovich’s design philosophy is visible throughout the round. He favored risk-reward setups over straightforward tests, and Worcester reflects that thinking from the front nine through to the finish. The course is not long by modern championship standards, but yardage is the least of your concerns here. The Karoo vegetation immediately off the fairways swallows wayward shots with no apology, and the wind which changes direction and strength between the front and back nine on most days turns manageable-looking holes into genuine problems if you are not managing the ball flight.

Three holes define the character of the layout. Hole 7 is a par 3 requiring a full carry over a large dam to a green sitting on the far edge of the water one of the earlier examples of this type of hole in the Western Cape when the course was built. Hole 12 is a short par 4 of 283 meters that splits the field: shorter hitters must carry a stream running across the fairway to get a sightline to the green, while longer hitters can attempt to drive it, but a water hazard left and five greenside bunkers make the aggressive play a genuine gamble. Hole 18 is a par 5 that shares a double green with the par-3 9th one of the largest double greens in South Africa, sitting directly in front of the two-storey clubhouse.

The final three holes on each nine consist entirely of par 3s and par 5s, with no par 4 to close either loop. It is an unusual structural choice that Matkovich introduced deliberately, and it gives the finish a different rhythm from most courses of the same era.

Worcester has produced three Sunshine Tour professionals Ockie Strydom, Oliver Bekker, and Christiaan Basson all of whom started their golf at the club. The annual Wijnlander, a four-day Stableford tournament held each October, is the club’s flagship event and draws participants across multiple days of competition.
