Western Cape Golf Courses: Book Tee Times & Explore South Africa's Best Golf Region in 2026/2027

Golf Course Map

The Western Cape is the most complete golf destination in South Africa, and it makes a compelling argument for being one of the best in the world. With 47 courses spread across Cape Town, the Winelands, and the Garden Route, it covers more course variety, scenic diversity, and quality per destination than any other province in the country.

Fancourt Golf Estate in George is the anchor. The Links Course at Fancourt has appeared in multiple global top-100 rankings and hosted the Presidents Cup in 2003, where the tournament famously ended in a tie between the United States and the International team after Tiger Woods and Ernie Els halved their singles match. The course is a constructed links in the truest sense, with the landform engineered to replicate the natural dune terrain of a seaside links despite being inland. The design demands genuine course management, and the course conditions are maintained to a standard that puts it among the best-kept layouts in Africa.

Pinnacle Point Golf Estate near Mossel Bay sits on clifftops above the Indian Ocean with holes dropping toward the water and the kind of views that make difficult approach shots easier to accept. It’s among the most dramatic settings of any course in South Africa.

Cape Town’s courses, including Royal Cape Golf Club, Clovelly Country Club, and the courses of the Cape Peninsula, add the city golf dimension to the province. The Winelands corridor between Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek has courses set against vineyard and mountain scenery that gives the Western Cape a visual richness that no other golf region in Africa can match.

Western Cape Golf Guide: Where to Play, When to Go, and How to Plan a Western Cape Golf Holiday

The Western Cape is South Africa’s most internationally recognized province and, for golfers, the most varied destination in the country. Forty-one courses are listed in the GolfLux database across three distinct zones: Cape Town and its coastlines, the Winelands of Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek, and the Garden Route from Mossel Bay through George, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay. The anchor of the entire circuit is Fancourt Golf Estate in George, where The Links Course is ranked among the world’s top layouts and hosted the President’s Cup in 2003. Pearl Valley Golf and Country Estate in Paarl is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course with a slope of 148, recognized as the best-conditioned course in the Western Cape. Royal Cape Golf Club, established in 1885, is South Africa’s oldest golf club.

The non-golf case for the Western Cape is the strongest of any province in this guide series. Table Mountain, the Cape Winelands, Franschhoek’s restaurant concentration, the Boulders Beach penguin colony, and the Garden Route’s forests, lagoons, and coastline give the province a tourism identity that operates independently of the golf. The framing is that the Western Cape is a world-class travel destination that also has outstanding golf, rather than a golf destination with other things to do on the side.

The Western Cape suits dedicated golf groups building a seven to fourteen day Garden Route and Winelands program, international visitors using Cape Town as a South Africa entry point, and couples for whom the wine, food, and landscape program carries equal weight to the rounds.

Best golf courses in Western Cape

1. Fancourt Links Course

The Links Course at Fancourt is an 18-hole, par 72 layout ranked among the world’s top courses according to the GolfLux destination introduction, located at Montagu Street, Blanco in George. The course hosted the 2003 President’s Cup and has appeared in numerous global top-100 rankings. The undulating fairways, pot bunkers, and wind exposure recreate the links experience in the Garden Route’s highland setting. It suits experienced golfers who want the most internationally recognized single round in South Africa, and the Fancourt resort makes a two-day stay-and-play practical.

2. Fancourt Montagu Course

The Montagu Course at Fancourt is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,714 meters, designed by Gary Player, at the same George estate according to the club. The Player design is the longer of the two main Fancourt layouts and the natural second playing day for golfers staying at the estate.

3. Pearl Valley Golf and Country Estate

Pearl Valley Golf and Country Estate is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,577 meters with a slope of 148, a Jack Nicklaus Signature course described as the best-conditioned in the Western Cape, located in Paarl according to the club. The slope of 148 is one of the highest in the GolfLux South Africa database. The Paarl location in the Winelands puts it about an hour from Cape Town, and the mountain valley setting gives the Nicklaus design its visual context.

4. Simola Golf and Country Estate

Simola Golf and Country Estate is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,401 meters with a slope of 141, located in Knysna according to the club. The course sits beneath high ridges with views across the Knysna Heads and the Indian Ocean. At slope 141 it is the most technically demanding round in the Knysna area, and the elevated ocean view context gives it a visual identity specific to the Garden Route’s lagoon town.

5. Royal Cape Golf Club

Royal Cape Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,131 meters, established in Cape Town in 1885 and described as the oldest golf club in South Africa, located at 174 Ottery Road in Wynberg according to the club. It suits golfers who want the most historically grounded Cape Town round and the oldest club in the country on their card.

6. Steenberg Golf Club

Steenberg Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 layout measuring 6,166 meters with a slope of 135, designed by Peter Matkovich, located in the Constantia winelands at Tokai, Cape Town according to the club. The Constantia setting in the Cape Peninsula’s most prestigious wine valley gives it a prestige that the suburban Cape Town courses cannot match.

Which course is better?

Fancourt Links is the world-ranked first choice. Fancourt Montagu is the Gary Player second day at the same estate. Pearl Valley is the highest slope and most demanding Winelands round. Simola is the Knysna drama and ocean views option. Royal Cape is the historical Cape Town anchor. Steenberg is the most prestigious Constantia Winelands round. Most seven to ten day Western Cape programs rotate through Fancourt, Pearl Valley, Simola, and Royal Cape.

Best time to play golf in Western Cape

The Western Cape has a Mediterranean climate, unique in South Africa, with dry summers and mild winters.

November to April is the driest and sunniest window. Temperatures are around 18 to 28 degrees Celsius, the Winelands harvest from February through April adds activity to the program, and the Garden Route is at its warmest. This is peak international tourism season.

May to October is the winter-spring window. Temperatures are milder at 12 to 20 degrees Celsius, the fynbos wildflowers bloom from August through October across the Cape Floral Kingdom landscapes, and the course conditions are at their greenest. The Western Cape’s Mediterranean winter is genuinely comfortable for golf compared to northern European winters, which is exactly why many international visitors plan their trips in this window.

Western Cape golf holidays and package tours

The Western Cape suits seven to fourteen day programs structured around the three zones. Cape Town International Airport has direct connections from London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Dubai, and multiple African and domestic hubs. The N2 Garden Route highway from Cape Town east to George is the backbone of any provincial circuit.

The most natural structure drives the N2 east: Winelands on days one and two at Pearl Valley and Steenberg, the Garden Route through Mossel Bay to George for Fancourt across two to three days, Simola in Knysna, and a return to Cape Town via the Outeniqua or Montagu passes.

The Cape Winelands are the most complete food and wine program alongside golf of any destination in this guide series. The Stellenbosch wine route, the Franschhoek village with its internationally recognized restaurants, and the Constantia valley wine estates within 20 minutes of Cape Town fill days without any planning effort. The V&A Waterfront, Table Mountain cable car, and Boulders Beach penguin colony near Simonstown are the most cited specific Cape Town activities for any shared program. Browse South Africa golf packages or create a custom Western Cape Garden Route itinerary.

Golf with the Cape Winelands and the Garden Route

The Cape Winelands northeast of Cape Town are centered on Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek, producing South Africa’s most internationally exported wines. Pearl Valley Golf and Country Estate sits within the Paarl wine valley, and a morning round followed by a Franschhoek wine tasting afternoon is the most naturally structured Winelands day. Franschhoek’s concentration of fine restaurants, several of which regularly appear in continental Africa’s top dining lists, gives the valley a food identity that extends the Winelands program well beyond wine alone.

The Garden Route between Mossel Bay and Storms River is South Africa’s most visited domestic tourism destination according to the country’s tourism authority. The Knysna Heads sandstone cliffs, the Tsitsikamma forest yellowwood trees, the Storms River suspension bridges in Tsitsikamma National Park, and the whale watching at Hermanus give the route a natural landscape program running alongside the golf circuit. Fancourt’s George location at the western end of the route, and Simola and Pezula in Knysna at its center, mean the main golf courses sit at the scenic high points of the drive.

Book tee times in Western Cape

Fancourt Links fills earliest and should be booked three to four weeks ahead during the November through April peak season. Pearl Valley requires two weeks’ advance booking for weekend slots. Simola and Steenberg are accessible with a week’s notice. Royal Cape requires booking through GolfLux as a private club. Garden Route courses at George, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay have good weekday availability with a few days’ notice outside school holiday periods.

When organizing a Western Cape program, confirm Fancourt Links and Pearl Valley as the first priority bookings, plan the Garden Route driving direction before finalizing accommodation, and book Fancourt’s on-site hotel for the George nights to eliminate transfer logistics. Start planning here or browse South Africa golf packages to find a program covering the full Garden Route and Winelands circuit.

Frequently asked questions about golf in Western Cape

October through April is the dry Cape summer and the primary golf season. November through February offers the best combination of warm temperatures, low rainfall, and long daylight hours. The Cape has a Mediterranean climate, which means winter from June through August brings cold fronts, significant rain, and strong winds that make comfortable golf difficult. The Garden Route around George and Mossel Bay has a slightly different microclimate and receives more even rainfall than Cape Town, but still follows the same general summer-better pattern.

Cape Town International Airport has direct domestic flights from Johannesburg (approximately 2 hours) and extensive international connections from Europe, the UK, Australia, and the Middle East. For Garden Route courses, George Airport (GRJ) has domestic connections from both Johannesburg and Cape Town. From Cape Town Airport, most Cape Peninsula and Winelands courses are 30 to 60 minutes by road. Fancourt at George is approximately 4.5 hours east of Cape Town by road along the N2 Garden Route, or a 1-hour domestic flight to George. GolfLux recommends flying to George for Golf Route focused trips and basing in Cape Town for city and Winelands golf.

The Stellenbosch and Franschhoek wine routes are world-class and the easiest to access directly from the main golf areas around Cape Town. Franschhoek in particular, with its Cape Dutch architecture and concentration of restaurant-wineries, is worth at least a lunch and a half-day of tastings. Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope are a 45-minute drive from central Cape Town and feel genuinely remote despite being within the city’s wider area. The Boulders Beach African penguin colony near Simon’s Town is a short detour from the Cape Point route. Robben Island tours from the V&A Waterfront give direct access to the island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
