Ever thought about golf in Chongqing? The city is known for its hotpots and modern skyline, but it is also a hidden gem worth exploring. With majestic mountains, peaceful fairways, and a touch of local flavor, golf in Chongqing offers a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else. In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan your Chongqing golf trip, from top courses and the best golf seasons to travel tips and off-course adventures.

General weather and best time to golf in Chongqing

Chongqing tourism is famous for its four distinct seasons, with an average annual temperature of around 18 degrees Celsius, providing a cool, pleasant atmosphere. Each season offers unique experiences:

General weather of 4 seasons in Chongqing

  • Spring (March to May): With temperatures ranging from 11 to 26 degrees Celsius, the mild weather is ideal for a full day of golf. Although there is occasional fog or light rain, it rains quickly, just be prepared with a waterproof jacket.
  • Summer (June to August): Summer in Chongqing can be harsh, especially with fog and quite high humidity. This is one of China’s “Three Furnaces” for a reason. I played golf here in July, and even when starting early in the morning, the heat was still very strong. It is not recommended to play in the afternoon unless you are used to the heat. Staying hydrated and wearing sunscreen is essential.
  • Autumn (September to November): This is the ideal time to start your golfing journey in Chongqing. The weather is cool all day, the skies are clearer and you will be especially treated to the captivating red, orange and yellow leaves.
  • Winter (December to February): Winter in Chongqing is not too cold and there is no snow, making it a year-round golf destination. Mornings and evenings are chilly, but afternoons are surprisingly warm. Bring plenty of layers, and don’t expect perfect playing conditions, but this is still a great time for a relaxing round of golf. Although the days are shorter, this is the low season so you will enjoy discounts and the courses are quieter.

Some helpful tips

Before you set off, here are some helpful tips I’ve picked up to help you avoid common pitfalls and make the most of your golf trip in Chongqing. From transportation tips to caddie etiquette, a little preparation goes a long way.

  • Courses like Chongqing Poly and Chongqing International can get pretty crowded, especially on weekends and during peak seasons. Book tee times at least two weeks in advance, or even earlier. You can ask your hotel to book for you or use an agent for convenience and better prices.
  • Many golf courses in Chongqing are built along mountainsides and have undulating terrain. Even with a cart, you’ll still be doing a fair amount of walking, especially around the tees and greens. A pair of comfortable, breathable, and well-gripped golf shoes will make a big difference.
  • Google Maps doesn’t work well in China, and Apple Maps or Baidu Maps (which are available in English) are more reliable. Save the club location as a screenshot or offline pin in case you lose signal in the mountains or countryside.
  • If you play golf in the summer, set your tee time for early morning when the temperature is not too high. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. And bring a light jacket because even in the summer, mornings can be quite cold and windy, especially in the mountains.

This guide covers everything you need to plan a smooth and memorable golf trip to Chongqing, from the best times to play and what to look out for at local courses, to off-course activities, estimated costs, and essential travel tips.
