Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, almost universally shortened to Ayutthaya, sits about 80 kilometers north of Bangkok and was the Siamese capital for more than 400 years before being sacked in 1767. The brick ruins that remain are now a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most rewarding day trips in Thailand. The course list is solid rather than spectacular. Bangsai Country Club, open since 1996, is the most established and offers a well-conditioned 18-hole layout that’s hosted regional events. Muang Ake Wang Noi opened in 2006 with a more modern design and water in play on most holes. Northern Rangsit Golf Club, the oldest of the three, sits closer to Bangkok and works well as a half-day round. Green fees are noticeably lower than in Hua Hin or central Bangkok, and tee sheets are usually only busy on weekends.
Playing golf in Ayutthaya works best when you build the temples into the trip rather than treating them as an afterthought. Wat Mahathat with its famous Buddha head in tree roots, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, and Wat Chaiwatthanaram all sit within a compact historical park area and can be covered in half a day. Boat tours around the island and the Ayutthaya floating market round out the non-golf options.
